UPM Timber and Lunawood Co-operation: Webinars

UPM Timber and Oy Lunawood Ltd are long-term partners, and both companies are committed to highlighting the excellence of wood as a building and interior material on a global level. As one of the forms of cooperation to achieve this goal, a joint webinar series was launched in 2024. During 2024, UPM Timber and Lunawood will organize three webinars covering a wide range of topics that deal with wood as a raw material from the origin to the final product.

The first UPM Timber and Lunawood webinar on 29 May provided an overview of UPM Timber's and Lunawood's cooperation and sustainable forest management in Finland. At first Design and Product Manager Matias Laaksonen presented Lunawood ThermoWood®, its properties and applications, and after the introduction, Elina Warsta, Senior Manager of Global Forestry at UPM, explained what forest management is like in Finland and how sustainable development and biodiversity are considered in UPM's operations.

Patented Lunawood ThermoWood® is a high quality, chemical-free wood material developed in the 1990s. It is suitable for all climates, enabling innovative and sustainable use of wood in construction and architecture. Lunawood is committed to buying raw material for its product only from certified suppliers and sustainably managed forests.

"Raw material plays a very important role in our production. We need very high-quality raw material to withstand the manufacturing process of Lunawood Thermowood," says Matias Laaksonen.

UPM Timber is Lunawood's long-term raw material supplier. Laaksonen continues to highlight the importance of not only the quality of the raw material, but also its sustainability, and says he is very satisfied with the raw material supplied by UPM Timber.

"At Lunawood, we are very proud to be able to receive sustainably and responsibly produced, high-quality Finnish raw material from UPM Timber and to process it into sustainable architecture all over the world," says Laaksonen.

In UPM Timber's presentation, Elina Warsta gave a comprehensive overview of global trends affecting the forest industry, UPM's principles and values, forest cycling, biodiversity and biodiversity-related objectives and measures. Warsta emphasized that UPM's operations do not cause deforestation anywhere in the world and UPM wants to ensure that forests are preserved for future generations. At the end of the webinar, Laaksonen and Warsta answered questions from the audience and discussed, among other things, the special relationship of Finns to forests, the traceability of wood and the importance of the slow growth of Finnish wood in creating a high-quality end product.

UPM Timber’s and Lunawood's first webinar brought together an international audience interested in wood construction, architecture and the origins of Finnish wood. The second part of the webinar series, to be held later in the autumn, will again focus on a new theme of wood construction and wood properties.
